Attention: Food Lovers!

"Your Gift Today Helps End Hunger in Our Community Tomorrow...

Now You Too Can Make A Difference!"

If you're a food lover, cook, chef or just want to make a difference in your Northern Michigan Community then this may be the most important letter you'll ever read.

Dear Fellow Food Lover:

Did you know there are families living right in your neighborhood that need our help? Based on recent U.S. Census data, over 15,000 people are living in poverty in Northwest Lower Michigan and over 35,000 people are living in low-income households. Most of them are threatened by food insecurity; and the need is growing...

I'd like to tell you about how both you and I can make a difference.

Hi, this is Paul Guyon.

There Are Families Living In Our Own Neighborhoods Who Need Our Help

Recently I ran into my friends Tom and Winnie, They are a hard working couple who fell into some bad luck. They live in nice home and we shop at the same grocery store down the street.

This summer Tom lost his job and hasn't been able to find work. They told me they were going to lose their home and didn't know what to do. Worse they could hardly afford to put food on the table for their family or even heat their home.

Tom is a very proud man and would never ask for help. I advised him to check out the local food pantry and Father Fred to see if they could help. At first he was reluctant but he knew he had little choice. He did finally go to Father Fred to get help with his heat.

Just last week, on Thanksgiving, I was driving by his house. He was shoveling snow so I stopped. I asked him what he'd had for dinner. He sadly replied "Hotdogs and Hamburgers is all we could do."

I encouraged him to seek help from the local pantry again and he said he would look into it.

I felt terrible, I had just returned from a Thanksgiving Feast and wanted to help him.

The Experience That Showed How I Can Help

Over the past year or so I've had the honor to have helped raise over $12,000 to help animals avoid suffering in shelter or an even worse fate. You may not recognize the rock band Twisted Finster but I'm sure you a familiar with the top Rock Radio Station in the area WKLT.

Twisted Finster is the rock band formed by morning show DJ Finster from the Omelette and Finster radio show.

WKLT and Twisted Finster lended its support to A.C. Paw the only "No Kill" animal shelter in the area. The experience was very gratifying. I wanted to do more.

When the band sought a new charity to support we wanted to support a more human cause and to help the community directly. In researching local charities I read about Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan.

Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan

Food Rescue is an exciting new initiative in the Grand Traverse area. Their mission is the collection and re-distribution of soon-to-expire fresh foods from available sources to people in need through the area’s food pantries, shelters and community meals programs.

The Food Rescue ‘model’ has been time-tested and proven in other markets both in Michigan and throughout the country. The goal is to achieve their collective effi ciencies, which is that 94% of each donated dollar goes directly to our food rescue program and our rescue/deliver internal cost will be just 16 cents per pound.

This means that each dollar donated provides six healthy meals to people in need.

I Can Cook But Don't Ask Me What's for Dinner Tonight!

I can cook but I'm no chef. When I'm asked "Hey Dad? What's for dinner?" I go the grocery store to figure it out. Sometimes I look on the boxes in the pre-made food aisle, or look on the internet for ideas. How in the heck can I put a cookbook together?

I knew I needed to gather recipes from area food experts if I was to make my dream become a reality. This September, I approached Food Rescue co-founders, George Powell and Bruce Byl to pitch the idea to enlist the support of local celebrities, chefs and the people, compile their favorite recipes into an electronic cookbook that could be downloaded and read on any computer with an internet connection.

The Cookbook For the People By The People

The Food to the Rescue Cookbook was created to help to raise community awareness and involvement with Food Rescue program. It provides an easy way for you to make a charitable donation, on and offline.

The cookbook makes an excellent gift for anyone who loves to cook or collect cookbooks. Profits from the sale of the cookbook go Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan and are put to use immediately to support its operation.

Since the project got underway in late September 2008; Local celebrities, chefs and the people have contributed over 100 easy to make, tasty, recipes.

The Cookbook Looks Fantastic!

It will be fun to try some great recipes from people we know! We hope everyone enjoys the Killer Brownies - it was a favorite with all three of our boys growing up and in college care packages. The original recipe was actually created by Deb's mom, Jean Haines. We're glad we can help support Food Rescue of NW Michigan.
